SFiFF: American Blackout

* I had the privilage tonight to see [American Blackout](https://americanblackout.org/), a film by [Ian Inaba](https://ian.gnn.tv/)(pictured) in association with [GNN](https://gnn.tv/). The film focuses on [Cynthia McKinney](https://www.house.gov/mckinney/) and the criminal politics that transpired in her temporarily losing her seat. The film takes this injustice and builds the case that the one example of political misconduct is but a single case study of a system set on hijacking democracy through the disenfranchisement of American voters and African Americans in particular. What is perhaps most startling in the film is it’s juxtaposition of both the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections and illustrates just how similar the situation was in both cases. One highly alarming fact brought out in American Blackout concerns the testimony of a private contracter hired by Florida, prior to the 2000 election, to purge the voter-lists of convicted felons. If you’ve read [Greg Palast](https://www.gregpalast.com/)’s The Best Democracy Money Can Buy*, you’ve already heard that story; but I bet you didn’t know that the contracter made use of a list of people convicted of misdemeanors in… Texas?!?! That’s right, apparently Governer George sent Governer Jeb a list of Texans that can’t vote in Florida. I think Ol’ George said this best in another important film: ** There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again. Apparently many Americans can… but like, *Fahrenheit 9/11*, *American Blackout* has the potential to catalyze real political change. If you’re still in doubt that American Democracy is in critical condition, go see *American Blackout* and your suspicions will likely be confirmed. And if you already realize that we’re in the fast lane on the Highway to Hell, then go see *American Blackout* and channel all that energy the film builds inside of you to go out and actually stop this assault on our rights.
