My brain just broke

I awoke Monday morning to find myself in my psychology lecture, watching a movie about spousal abuse. We were starting our new unit on relationships, and in recognition of "International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women," my teacher was showing us "Battered Women and the Men who Beat Them," presented by Motorola. A noble gesture, sure, but not exactly how I wanted to begin my week and certainly not a positive way to begin his unit on relationships, but I digress. Ever since I watched the film, I can't get the horrors of abuse out of my head. I can't stop thinking about what I can do to help end the atrocities. I sit there and deconstruct how this shit can happen. Anyhow, I don't feel up to writing anymore right now -- I know it's been a long time since I've written anything -- don't worry, everything's fine in my life -- Thanksgiving promises to be an eclectic night at my dad's, I'm seeing my girlfriend tommorow. Life is good -- I just wish the world was doing as well... I wrote this is response to Rel's entry -- I kinda got sidetracked and didn't finish though... "Yeah, domestic abuse is probably one of the worst of the neuroses that infest our society, as far as I'm concerned. The fact that you'd intentionally harm those precious few people in your life that you love (and abusers usually do love those which they torment), is puzzling and sad. Sometimes the abuse comes wrapped in the veil of 'discipline' -- "My wife didn't cook dinner tonight, like she's supposed to, so I'm going to stick my fist through her face." This stems from a hierarchal view of society and that "I, as head of my family, have full and complete control over my wife and children, and when they don't do what I want them to, I have every right to reprimand them as I deem appropriate." "From what I've seen, this might be the main instigator in abuse, this flawed perspective that humans are things you own. In regards to verbal abuse... oh shit -- this is getting to be a long comment -- suffice it to say -- physical, sexual, verbal and psychological abuse is truly shameful and especially despicable when directed toward your significant other or your children. Let's figure out what we can do to help end it! November 25th was the UN's "International Day to Elliminate Violence against Women" did you know that? I didn't till my Psych class discussed this yesterday. "
