A turbulant New Year: quietirony — LiveJournal

Well - I suppose it's been a while since I last posted to the world what's been going on in my life. So, well... here's what has happened since about New Years, there's been a lot of really great moments and some really shitty ones as well... The night before New Years Eve, I fell asleep in the living room while watching Ghost World. While I was sleeping Elaine had been trying to call me, around 5AM I wake up to the sound of the phone ringing, it's Elaine and I call her back before listening to the 5 messages she had left me since I crashed out in my living room about 10 o'clock. When I call her up, she's upset. Her father has been giving her a hard time and she tells me she's decided that she can't handle all this bullshit anymore and that she wants to break up with me. We had planned to spend NYE at a rave at the Cow Palace, but now she's decided she's just gonna spend the night getting drunk at home all by herself. I'm crushed. I didn't care what I did on New Years Eve as long as I was going to get to spend it with Elaine, and here she is calling to break up with me. It's not that I don't understand her frustration, I totally did and the things her father said to her were so mean and disgusting that I couldn't begin to blame her for wanting to end our relationship but the realization that I would be losing my girlfriend and spending NYE alone was incredibly overwhelming. I tell her how I feel, and I try to tell her how much she means to me. We basically end up talking through this whole thing and she decides that she isn't going to break up with me, and that she'll be there with me in SF for NYE. Relieved and exhausted I fall to sleep just before 8 in the morning, having to be at work by 12:30. I drag my tired carcass to work, I'm sick and emotionally drained but I manage to suffer through the day with the uplifting notion that I'm going to be seeing my girlfriend tonight. I call her up when I get home and she's arguing with her parents again. After a late start, the three of them finally head up to San Francisco. Her parents refuse to drop Elaine off at my house on the way to the hotel and intsead make me traverse on BART up to their hotel. Meanwhile Elaine informs me that her parents have refused to let her stay over at my house and that I have to get her home by 3AM or else her parents will disown her. I also get ahold of Josh Diaz during this time and he tells me about an UG in Oakland in the warehouse Rene lives in. I sell the over-priced $45 tickets to the massive we'd planned to go to and make plans to hit-up the Oakland underground with Elaine. Being overly cautious, I suggest to Elaine we take BART and a cab out to the party so that I don't have to worry about staying sober and around 11:00 our train finally departs 24th Street station towards the East Bay. While we're waiting to catch a train some random party-goers decide that we look happy (I was damn-near ecstatic to be spending NYE with my girlfriend), and take our picture. A little later on they ask us to join them in their group picture and three cameras snap us with their group of friends. This happens yet again on the train-ride when a guy sitting behind us randomly decides to take our picture. Strange, eh? By 11:30PM we're still not off the train and Elaine is beginning to get a little upset that we'll likely be spending the count-down in a Taxi-cab. I apoligize, but I really didn't want to drive and I'm still hopeful we'll get there by midnight until I get off the train and call a cab company only to find out that the taxi drivers are so busy right now that they aren't answering there phones. We're alone in Oakland and we don't even know which direction we're going as we start walking towards a busy intersection, cold and frustrated. All of a sudden, a taxi slips out of the darkness and we hail him down. It's 11:45PM and we don't know how far it is to the party but there's hope again that we'll make it before midnight. It's only a five minute drive and we spend the next 5 minutes trying figure out which building the party is in picking up strangers in search of the same party along the way. Just before midnight we arrive to the party and join the crowd in counting down the last few seconds of the New Year. It's exhilarating, and I feel euphoric as I celebrate in my girlfriends arms, and kiss her as the clock strikes midnight. Yay! The party is great and I have a really good time, but we aren't able to stay long and have to leave by 1:30 so that we can catch BART in time to get home by 3. Just before we leave a guy shows up with a bottle of vodka and some mixers and we're able to embark on our journey nicely buzzed. We begin the trek back towards BART on foot, hoping that a taxi will rescue us soon but we manage to make it all the way back to the station before seeing one. When the train finally arives we hop on the last car and begin heading back to San Francisco. Fortune smiles upon us and we have the car all to ourselves. Needless to say we make good use of the privacy and ignore the security camera eyeing us. We pull up to the station with 15 minutes left before three and walk over to the hotel. Hotel security is beefed up for New Years and they're only allowing guests (who were given those hospital-style non removable bracelets to identify themselves) into the actual hotel. I talk to the security guard at the front and he agrees to let me come in briefly to drop Elaine off. He takes my ID and says if I'm not back in 20 minutes he won't be there anymore. I tell him that's fine and we smoke a cigarette in the outdoor lobby before heading in. After we're done with our cigarette an hispanic woman approaches me and demands to see my wristband. We tell her what's going on and how the other security guard is holding onto my ID. She gets in my face and tells me that it doesn't matter and that I'm not getting in. Reluctantly I agree and begin saying goodnight to my girlfriend. Within seconds she yells at me that I have to leave. I ask for "3 seconds" to say goodbye to my girlfriend and I'm told, "no, I will not give you 3 seconds, I'm not here to baby-sit you all night." Frustrated beyond belief at this point, I ask Elaine to call me and kiss her goodnight. The security guard refuses to let me kiss my girlfriend and begins getting the attention of a nearby police officer. I quickly depart and hop on BART, just in time to catch the last train back to my house. I get home, spend another couple hours hanging out and getting more trashed with my roommates before ushering myself to sleep just before 6AM. Less than four hours later I'm up and on my way to work. Of the four employees scheduled to work on New Years, only myself and the manager that openned the store manage to get in to work on time. Good for me, right? Feeling absolutely exhausted, hung over, and sick, I somehow manage to get through the day. I drive over to Elaine's friend Stuart's house, and Elaine and I begin our drive up to Santa Rosa for dinner at my dad's. Yet again, we aren't able to stay long as Elaine's tyrannical parents have decided that she now has to be home by 11 instead of 12-1 as they had originally said on New Years Eve. I'm utterly exhausted and tell Elaine that there's no way that I can safely drive home until I get some rest and she assures me that she'll call a friend so that I have somewhere to sleep before I drive home. Unfortunately the only two friends Elaine was able to call both have family over and there's no way I can crash at their houses. On the way, I realize that I think I've left Elaine's ID and credit cards in my room so we call her parents to say we'll be arriving a few minutes late. Her father flips the fuck out and gives her a bunch of shit about how it's already 8:45PM and that she better be home by 11. At precisely 11 o'clock her father calls and demands to know where we are. He's furious and tells her that she might as well turn around and head back to the city. Elaine is completely devasted and calls her mom who's only partially supportive and we continue into Salinas. When we get into Salinas, Elaine, the sweetest girlfriend ever imaginable, stops at the ATM and takes out $80 for me so that I can get a motel room in case her parent's don't let me sleep in her living room. We get home, and her father let's us in. While I'm using the restroom, she talks to her dad and asks him where the extra blankets are so that I can sleep in my car in the driveway with the intent that he'll be sympathetic and allow me to crash out in the living room. Instead he tells her that I can't even spend the night in my car and that I need to go home. I finish up and we call to find me a motel. With reservation, Elaine's father allows her to take their mini-van and I follow her to a motel. We say goodnight and I quickly fall off to sleep feeling completely fatigued and emotionally exhuasted. The next morning Elaine comes over, we get some lunch and then I head home. I go to my dad's later on, and he givees me an X-box for christmas! Yay! On my way home from my dad's, last night, I stop by my work to pick up my pay-check and see when I'm working next week. I get my pay-check and see that I'm no longer listed on the schedule. It turns out that they didn't even bother to tell me that I no longer have a job, and after giving me shit for hours, making me work a closing shift on New Years Eve and openning New Years morning they decide to let me go. It's fucking infuriating, now I don't have any money, have an entire month without school and have to find a new job as soon as I can. Well, that's been my year thus far. There's been some really great moments and some absolute shit. It's been frustrating and exhilariting and it's only the 4th of January... let's hope things get better and I don't have twelve more months of riding this emotional roller coaster. I miss you Elaine, I wish you could come see me right now, I just feel spent and don't have the energy to come see you. It's frustrating.
