i hope you and all your lameass hippie friends get thrown in jail.

All of the posters above have missed the point entirely, instead choosing to get angry at “hippy bloggers trying to break the law”. Regardless of Wolf’s involvement in the demonstration at the G8 summit, the point is that as currently defined CA law protects his video source under the Shield Law. The Federal government is using a grand jury to get around the CA law even though no federal crimes are being charged. The entire premise of the Feds being involved at all is based upon minor damage to a SF poilce cruiser. The Fed is arguing that because that police dept receives some federal funds then the cruiser is partly federal property and therefore federal law can be applied to the case. The government is abusing its power and overreaching with the grand jury to bypass a state law. This is about states’ rights, not ‘lawless hippies’, if the Feds can simply overcome any state law by finding some tenuous link to federal funds and invoking a grand jury then the entire point of states’ is lost! Wake up people, this is why we have such a huge and overbearing federal government, shortsighted rabblerousers just like to see others get punished and completely miss the constitutional abuses that are being perpetrated to do so!

Illiterate people have not the skills to use language effectively. They must resort to profanity, physical posture and loud voices in an attempt to bully you into submission. I don’t like bullies of any sort including police, military or civilian.

I remember the Vietnam war protests and Kent State University when the National Guard started shooting people. I have personally experienced bully cops. I am a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Vietnam-era veteran) and so do not care for the previous derogatory statements of you because it is obvious that none of the writers were ever in the military and so do not have an appreciation of the freedoms and right to a free press; see http://usinfo.state.gov/products/pubs/rightsof/press.htm .

The Beach Boys Mike Love wrote some great lyrics in “Student Demonstration Time.” Lyrics are here: http://www.cabinessence.net/lyrics/surfs_up.html . It’s a great song about some sad chapters in American justice or lack thereof..

Mr. Wolf, I respect and honor your courage. I suspect that the police are more worried about creating defenses for charges of police brutality than they are of some vehicle damage. Or they don’t want future recordings of their brutality to make the evening news. Let them sweat.

If the police can have cameras in their squad cars then when they show up for potential riot control why don’t they have their own cameras? Could it be that they don’t want witnesses or a record that can be viewed in court?

It funny how right-wing Fox watchers call themselves patriotd while trampling on freedom of speech, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution whenever those rights are excercised by someone they disagree with. But frankly, the liberal side have themselves to blame also. There should not be something called a hate crime–a crime is a crime regardless of the motivation and sentences shouldn’t vary because fo the color of the victim or the perp. Nor should the KKK, Nazis, or Anti-gay protestors be persecuted unless they break the law. As further examples of self-inflicted liberal wounds: affirmative action has institutionalized prejudice and further divded this nation by makign race more of an issue instead of less. the liberals have as much to answer for as the conservatives. One last one: amnesty for idenitiy-stealing illegals puts criminals ahead of identity theft victims. every illegal has forged social security papers–and that is hurting a real law-abiding citizen somewhere. It is wrong and amnesty is very wrong. So liberals, you bring it on yourselves even if your oppoents are Neanderthals. You _seem_ smarter but then you support stupid things. So how ca we tell?

It amazes me that young kids and hippies seem to justify violence and destruction as long as it furthers the cause that they are “fighting” for. Everyone else is a fascist. Great job shooting vandalism, civil disobedience and obstruction of justice! Carry on jounalist and don’t forget the KY on your way to jail.

It’s not journalism. He didn’t take an outside perspective. He’s not there for the press, and shield laws protect newsgatherers, and not any idiot with a camera.

I’m all for people’s civil liberties, but this is ridiculous.

People to often get blinded by the Left/Right nonsense when all that matters is right and wrong. I don’t like “hippies” but people have to have the right to demonstrate and report on it. I am much more concerned about a powerful government that oversteps its bounds to enforce its will, be it wrong or right, rather than by a bunch of “hippies”.

Historically revolutions have helped to right wrongs. If the government is allowed to smother peaceable means of revolutions & dissemination of information you are left to its mercy, regardless of the right & wrong debate.

middleman, i agree that polarization is bad. too much right/left hate out there. I also agree that the right to demonstrate should be defended. What i have a problem with is people destroying property and obstructing justice. I don’t see the government overstepping it’s bounds here, i see people getting arrested for idiotic illegal behavior. Revolution is also not a bad thing either, it’s how we got here, but every avenue must be explored first.

Both “groups” in this debacle are full of dopes. Let’s just look at two examples:

    1) What peaceful protest meaning is there to dragging news paper stands into the road? You guys were causing a public disturbance. Usually, regardless of what kind of government is in place, that’s a bad thing.

    2) A cop/fed (whatever) going around saying “You’re gonna get blasted” is equally as dumb. Way to spoil the milk on that one.

If this protest had any merit whatsoever, you would have taken a different route. Instead, you have a bunch of uninformed opinions shooting out of the mouths of a bunch of cornballs. It’s only going to lead you into trouble. Next time, try taking a better approach.

    Also, Capitalism sucks.

You and your goofy hipster friends give the anarchist movement a bad name. You have a tape that DOCUMENTS A CRIME. The police have every right to ask for it.

Now if you weren’t some sort of wanna be assclown and actually, you know, had a legit protest and not a bunch of little kids who only like anarchy because they heard of it on a shitty Anti-Flag bootleg… well maybe you would have a case.

Also, not only are you giving anarchists and anti-government movements everywhere a bad name by just breathing every morning, you are also giving journalists a bad name for even pretending to be one. You, sir, are as much as a journalist as I am the Queen of England.

I hate our government and the way it represents itself, but the only thing I hate more is assholes like you and your girl-pants wearing buddies using a legitimate stance to get more MySpace friends.

Have fun in federal ass-raping prison, I wonder if you will cry to your ‘pig’ guards when a large man takes your ass virginity. Good luck mate!

Wow – so much ignorance here. Freedom of the press is a non-partisan issue, or should be. The freedom to tape a public event and not get harassed is crucial to our freedom and responsibility to keep the government accountable for its actions.

Yeah, the people in the video maybe are jerks and out of hand, but the government is a bunch of jerkoffs, saying that they should have the original tape (note – not a copy they could get by downloading it) because of some BS about them owning a piece of city-owned property. It’s straight BS. The fact that they have to make up nonsense like this is a testament to them not having a legal leg to stand on.

Josh is fighting the good fight here. He is standing up for what’s right. It would be much easier to do what the government says but they don’t have the right to what they demand.

And what makes a journalist? A paycheck? Then does that make Geraldo Rivera or some douchebag at Fox who simply reads the lies his boss gives him more of a journalist than me or Josh Wolf? That’s a sad statement. Some of us report what’s going on and yet we are not part of the MSM and thus not taken seriously even though we are doing a better job.

It really hard to listen to people who have no sense of their rights as an American, as a free people, complain about someone who is putting himself in jeoprady rather than let the government erode those rights.

Those rights include the right to be an informed public, and it was because Josh Wolf shot that video, which was picked up by news organizations, that makes him a journalist, because he acted to inform the public of this protest. If he had not been acting in the role of a journalist, the government would be unaware of the existence of this video, so for them to claim he is not a journalist is complete double-talk.

The journalist did not create the events shown on the tape. The jouralist recorded them, and news agencies broadcast them. How can anyone claim he is not a journalist?

The government, however, has no real interest in the tape itself, or in Josh Wolf’s testimony; it’s purpose here is to assert the Federal Governments supremacy over State law (the California Shield Law), a policy that the Feds have been pursuing on many fronts over the past 6 years – environmental law being the clearist example, as they have tried to trump California’s right to protect the health of the people by insisting that only the Federal Gov. has the right to set standards.

So the question you must all ask yourselves is, ‘do I want the Federal Government overruling my State laws?’

If you let them prevail here, how will you stop them later? Stand up for your rights, or you lose them.

I not sure if the protesters lost there brains before they went out on the road or there just too lazy to pay attention in history class. If they did they would have noticed that there was anarchy in before there where governments. Based on certain theories of the natural state of man by philosophers like Hobbes and Locke, Man forms social contracts because of fear of death and losing one’s possessions. Regardless this does seem like a state issue but federal property was damaged. I imagined the AUSA isn’t too thrilled to have a case like this considering there used to prosecution drug dealers and fraudsters
