Position Summaries
Summaries of Josh's Positions on major issue (a work in progress)
Housing
Homelessness
We must empower those without homes to contribute to the city’s economy and
culture. As mayor, Josh will establish
programs to harness the existing skills and crafts of our underemployed and
establish a job corps to help make San Francisco better.
For those who are unable to join the workforce and are in need of further
aid, Josh will work with the existing homeless support organizations to develop
a comprehensive network with the city to bridge the gap.
Affordable Housing
It is increasingly impossible to afford to live
in San Francisco. We must act now before our working people are forced out. Future
development must include housing that is affordable to low and middle income
San Franciscans. Rent Control should be strengthened, and supplemented with
vacancy laws to insure that the housing stock is being used to its full
potential.
Environment
Energy
Josh is committed to clean energy and renewable resources. By 2017, 51% of
San Francisco’s energy should be renewable and he supports Community Choice
Aggregation which was recently passed by the Board to see to this modest goal.
Pollution
By developing a comprehensive network of bike paths, and expanding MUNI to
establish a public transit system that is as efficient as private automobiles
for everyone everywhere, driving will become progressively less necessary and
the impact of automobiles on the environment will be reduced dramatically.
Crime
Policing
Josh is in favor of community policing and feels that if the community’s
relationship to the police changes we will see a decrease in the rate of
violent crime. When the police get out of their cars and start walking their
beats, they will become part of the community and not be perceived as an
occupying force.
Josh feels that police officers should be outfitted with personal cameras
as a means to further establish accountability, both to themselves and to the
public.
Work and Education Opportunities
Crime is a symptom of poverty, all solutions to violent crime must include
a strong job program coupled with efforts to strengthen the community. By
establishing City Community Centers located in every neighborhood that provide
essential services including job training, and sustainable economic
opportunities Josh feels that the rate of crime in San Francisco will decrease
dramatically.
Wifi & The Digital Divide
The Google/Earthlink plan for municipal wireless Internet does nothing to
resolve the digital divide in our city. It is nothing short of selling the
public commons to the highest corporate bidder and is certainly not democratic.
Josh supports a municipal fiber network and feels that one approach to
lessoning the divide is through the establishment of numerous 24-hour community
centers that, in addition to providing other services, would also offer free
computer access and training in basic and more advanced computer skills.
LGBT Issues
Marriage for All
As mayor Josh will look into the City of San Francisco look into offering a
county marriage license to supplement
the state documents The City now provides. Although the state of California
refuses to support and honor gay marriage, the city and county of San Francisco
should provide a way for people who love each other to formalize that love
through marriage.
